G20: Putin informs India PM Modi will not go to the conference in Delhi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi his decision to abstain from participating in the forthcoming G20 Summit scheduled to take place in Delhi next month.

The upcoming summit, scheduled to take place in the capital city of Delhi on 9-10 September, will be hosted by India.

President Vladimir Putin contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and conveyed that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent him at the conference.

According to a statement released by India, the two leaders engaged in discussions pertaining to several regional and global matters that were of shared interest.

According to a statement made by a representative from the Russian government, it was indicated last week that President Putin would not be present at the summit due to his demanding schedule.

The G20 comprises the 19 most affluent nations globally, in addition to the European Union. The G20 presidency is presently held by India, with the position being subject to annual rotation among member countries.

The anticipated topic of discussion at the summit in Delhi, which will be attended by global leaders such as US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is Russia's incursion into Ukraine.

Mr. Putin participated in the recent Brics summit, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The summit took place in Johannesburg, with Mr. Putin attending remotely via video link. This precautionary measure was taken to mitigate the potential apprehension by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest order for Mr. Putin, alleging his involvement in war crimes committed in Ukraine.

In the official statement released on Monday, India acknowledged that Prime Minister Modi shown comprehension of Russia's choice and expressed gratitude towards President Putin for endorsing India's actions during its tenure as the G20 presidency.

The statement issued by Russia did not make any reference to the absence of Mr. Putin at the G20 summit. Instead, it emphasized the agreement between the two nations to engage in close collaboration within the framework of Russia's upcoming presidency of BRICS, commencing on January 1st of the following year.

The statement further mentioned that the conversation also encompassed contemporary matters pertaining to the relationship between Russia and India, which are advancing in a progressively positive manner within the framework of a particularly designated strategic partnership.
