Senate Committee pledges assistance to the army in reducing insecurity
The Nigerian Senate has promised the Nigerian Army (NA) its undivided assistance in overcoming the nation's security obstacles.

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, the Senate committed to this when Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar'Adua, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, took Committee members on a familiarization tour to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Senator Yar'Adua expressed gratitude for the Nigerian Army's hard work in carrying out its constitutionally-mandated statutory duties. In order to effectively carry out its legislative oversight responsibilities and bring about legislative reforms that will strengthen NA's efforts in actualizing its constitutional responsibilities of defending Nigeria's territorial integrity and ensuring security in the nation, the senator argued for collaboration between the legislative body and the Nigerian Army.

Following a briefing on the operational and administrative activities of the NA, the legislators acknowledged that the Nigerian Army faces formidable security problems and committed to providing the necessary assistance to ensure that the troops' welfare is appropriately taken care of. He went on to say that this will spur the soldiers on to provide their best effort.

The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja was given the draft legislative agenda for the NA by the Senate Chairman, who also mentioned that the committee will prioritize the NA's search for the necessary enablers to improve its operating efficiency.

The Chief of Army Staff thanked the committee in his remarks for its vital role in fostering the NA's efficient operation. According to the COAS, the NA recognizes the value of the legislature's monitoring role and notes that it has been influenced by this in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

According to the Army Chief, the Senate's input is much valued by the NA, which represents a wide range of national constituencies, and has assisted in refining the organization's current activities.

Thanking the MPs for their assistance since the National Assembly's inception, General Lagbaja conveyed his gratitude.

The Senate Committee on Army Chairman's presentation of a suggested legislative agenda to the COAS was the high point of the visit.
