The nationwide teacher shortage situation is a concern that UBEC raises.
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has expressed concern over a shortage of teachers in public schools in Nigeria, attributing a 29% reduction to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and the private sector to address challenges in the basic education sub-sector.

He highlighted the inadequacy of the over N100 billion yearly funding for basic education and called for private sector involvement to make a difference in the lives of children.

The meeting aimed to explore ways of building a functional relationship with the private sector to enhance the development of basic education in the country.

Representatives from various foundations and organizations, including Oando Foundation and Aliko Dangote Foundation, pledged to collaborate with UBEC and scale up education interventions in the sub-sector.

A UNESCO report indicated that 5.4 million teachers are needed at the primary level in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve universal basic education by 2030.
