Ikoyi locals want Sanwo-Olu to halt operating illegal dredgers in order to stop an approaching flood and ocean surge.
Residents of Ikoyi are urging the Lagos State government to intervene and prevent their area from being submerged by the sea.

They highlight the activities of land speculators who are dredging and indiscriminately sandfilling the lagoon, which poses a threat of aggravating flooding in neighborhoods already below sea level.

The Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Lekki, Ikoyi, and Victoria Island has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to address the issue and prevent the encroachment of waterfronts, emphasizing the need to protect against coastal erosion caused by illegal sand-filling activities.

The group also raises concerns about the projected population disruptions in low-elevation coastal zones, with an estimated 108 to 116 million people in Africa living in such areas by 2030, according to the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies.
