NBS: Vitality and strength of the data system are essential

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) faces challenges to its credibility, with stakeholders calling for a review of its legal framework to enhance independence and transparency. 

The NBS aims to build a stronger statistical system for Nigeria's economic development. 

However, concerns arise, especially after the release of controversial data, such as the unemployment rate decline despite contradictory evidence. 

Stakeholders propose modernizing the statistical system to international standards and safeguarding the NBS's independence through legal reforms. 

The current Statistician-General defends the new methodology, but criticisms and calls for legislative deterrence persist, urging amendments to the NBS Act. 

Some lawmakers express readiness to support autonomy for the NBS.
